Narendra Modi Secured a Third Term as India’s Prime Minister—But With Less Power Than Expected

The elections this year, which started on April 19 and ended on June 1, 

were expected to result in a third term for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to political analysts and exit polls.

Could his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), get enough votes to assert a supermajority? was the issue.   

As the final results poured in on Tuesday, June 4, the answer became evident.

The lower house of parliament in India, the Lok Sabha, has 543 seats.
